Hilma depicts scenes from the life of Hilma af Klint, the Swedish painter and Christian mystic considered by many the first modern abstract artist. As The Five, Hilma and her friends and colleagues summon astral guardians, the High Masters, who present themselves as Ananda, Gregor, Clement, and Amaliel. These beings are ancient, mysterious, and enlightened, perhaps originating from Tibet. The spirits guide Hilma as she paints, in order to bring the material and immaterial worlds closer together. As the drama concludes, Hilma reflects on her experiences, and what will come.
